The finals of the eighth Schools Olympic Programme (SOP), organised by Qatar Olympic Committee and the Supreme Education Council and exclusively sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar, will be held today and tomorrow at the Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence.
Thousands of students from across Qatar will compete in 16 different disciplines, underlining the key role of sports and exercise in promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Maersk Oil Qatar’s Action on Diabetes (AoD) programme screening bus and the One Second Students for Road Safety driving simulator will be stationed at the entrance of Aspire Dome, offering diabetes screening for adult visitors and to promote road safety awareness among young people and the public.
Together with the SOP, AoD and One Second form part of Maersk Oil Qatar’s Action for Qatar social investment programme, which is committed to supporting the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and delivering real, tangible and long-term benefits for Qatar, according to a statement.
The AoD partnership aims to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Qatar and in 2014 alone tested the glucose levels of more than 18,000 people, in addition to supporting local healthcare institutions through research, education and awareness campaigns.
The One Second driving simulator aims to educate Qatar’s youth to be responsible road users by acquiring crucial road sense and safe driving skills, and seeks to make all students road safety ambassadors. Some 3,450 students and young people participated in 2014, thanks to the practical training sessions they received through the driving simulator and the interactive presentations provided by the Students for Road Safety instructors.
School visits were also organised with guidance from the Traffic Department, boosting One Second’s positive impact on student behaviour.
Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, deputy managing director of Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “Through its comprehensive social investment programme Action for Qatar, Maersk Oil Qatar has renewed its unwavering commitment to valuable partnerships that truly and sustainably benefit Qatar, evidenced by our exclusive sponsorship of SOP.
“I am proud to see Maersk Oil Qatar, Action on Diabetes, Students for Road Safety and SOP working together to highlight the importance of adopting healthier and safer lifestyles that ensure a better future for all.”
