The General Directorate of Civil Defence (GDCD) held celebrations yesterday to mark World Civil Defence Day with a host of programmes at the Civil Defence Officers’ Club.
The celebrations held under the theme “Sustainable development and its role in risk reduction” saw the attendance of Civil Defence assistant director Brigadier Aman Saad al-Sulaiti and Operations Department director Brigadier Hamad al-Dohaimi.
Other department directors and officers from Civil Defence and other departments of the Ministry of Interior were also present at the event.
While speaking at the event held to mark the celebrations, GDCD director-general Staff Brigadier Abdullah Mohamed al-Sowaidi recalled the exemplary services rendered by personnel from different departments and sections of Civil Defence.
He specifically remembered the services of the operations department and those who sacrificed their lives while protecting people and property.
Al-Sowaidi also highlighted the support and co-operation between different civil agencies, stressing that the safety of the community required the concerted effort and constructive co-operation of all segments of society.
Administrative Affairs director Brigadier Fahad al-Kubaisi said that the department is prepared to deploy qualified and well-trained staff members in all sections to carry out their missions efficiently.
While remembering the missions carried out by his department, Support Service Department director Lieutenant-Colonel Hussain Ibrahim al-Asmakh said that they met the requirements of other departments through effective and timely supply of equipment and advanced technology.
He also said Civil Defence has most advanced machinery, equipment and vehicles in its possession.
Students from Omar bin al-Khattab Independent School for Boys performed a show in co-operation with Civil Defence, highlighting a message on safety awareness.
A mock drill was held at the end of the event, in which a fire alarm was triggered and the meeting hall evacuated. All the attendees were guided to the assembly point safely.
