The Indian embassy has reported the deaths of 57 Indian nationals in Qatar since the beginning of 2015, its monthly community house was informed yesterday. Last year a total of 279 Indians died in the country.
So far this year, the mission received 551 complaints at its Labour and Community section. Last year a total of 3,943 complaints were received.
The house was also told that 96 Indians are serving jail sentence at the country’s Central Prison while 100 people are awaiting deportation.
The latest figures of those serving jail sentence was based on the visit of an Indian embassy team to the Central Prison earlier this month.
On the basis of the requests received from the Qatari authorities for travel documents for inmates housed at the Deportation Centre, the embassy has issued 12 emergency certificates so far this month.
The embassy also issued four air tickets to Indian nationals in distress for their return to the home land this month.
The Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF) has issued four tickets so far this month.
At the meeting yesterday, besides Indian Ambassador Sanjiv Arora and other officials,  ICBF president Arvind Patil also took part in the meeting.
While there were no fresh complaints lodged yesterday, the meeting was utilised to review progress on the earlier complaints received by the embassy.
Tomorrow (February 27) the ICBF is hosting a free medical camp for the low-paid workers of all nationalities residing in the Al Khor area at Aster Medical Centre premises, Al Khor. It will be held between 7 and 1.30. The camp is being organised in collaboration with the Indian Doctors Club (Indian Medical Association) and Aster Medical Centre.
Any urgent consular and labour issues/cases of the Indian nationals residing in the country may also be conveyed to the embassy officials at the medical camp.
