A Criminal Court has sentenced 19 Asians to jail for three years each after they were convicted of illegally brewing liquor for sale in the Industrial Area, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
Some of the gang members have also been handed a one-year term each for attacking three persons with weapons. Further, the convicted persons have been directed to pay the victims of the attack a QR62,000 compensation, the daily adds.
The court has also ordered the deportation of all 19 on completion of the prison term, according to the report.
The crime was discovered after police were notified that a group of persons had attacked some people with weapons. During a raid, police found four large choppers, a fire extinguisher and 10 plastic bags containing locally manufactured liquor that was sold near offices, the daily states.
It was found that the 19 accused would buy vehicles and register them in the names of others so as to use them for distributing the liquor. They carried out the business from a rented house in the Rayyan area and the liquor was marketed by a person in return for a monthly payment, the report points out.
A security guard at an office got suspicious and, along with some others, started keeping an eye on one of the men who was selling liquor. While doing so, they were attacked by the gang members.
The incident was brought to the notice of the police and a probe led to the discovery of the illegal liquor brewing and promotional activities of the gang. The accused have admitted to being involved in the racket and using choppers to attack the trio, the report further states.
