The name of the new port at Umm Al-Hul, Mesaieed Area will be revealed on Thursday, when its basin is to be flooded with water, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and the New Port Steering Committee announced yesterday in a statement.
The basin of the new port is around 4km long, 700m wide, and 17m deep, making it possible for the largest vessels in the world to pass through it. It is considered to be one of the most important ports of Qatar as it is linked to the other GCC countries through a network of land and marine links.
The new port has 12 platform cranes, each capable of carrying 80 tonnes or two containers of 40ft length each simultaneously. There will be other sophisticated equipment to help the transport of goods and cargoes in a smooth manner.
The architectural and engineering works of the new port started in June 2010 on a space of 24sq km.  Some 60mn hours of work have gone into the project, which currently has 9,000 workers.
The number of workers could reach up to 17,000 during the peak phase, the statement added.
