In an initiative aimed at promoting environmentally-friendly fuel in Qatar, Woqod will set up seven more compressed natural gas (CNG) stations within two years.
Woqod (Qatar Fuel) said it planned to “develop” the CNG sector under the “leadership” of Qatar Petroleum (QP).
Details released by the company following a meeting of Woqod’s board of directors on Monday showed that it had “refilled and sold” nearly 5.1mn metal, 1.4mn Shafaf (12kg) and 39,000 (6kg) LPG cylinders in Qatar last year.
Last year, the total sale of petroleum products in Qatar, including diesel, gasoline and jet fuel, reached 7,256mn litres, a 12.7% increase compared with figures for 2013.
Woqod said some 13 fuel stations are under construction across Qatar. These are coming up at Al Wakrah, Al Wajbah, Al Jmayliyyah, Al Aqla (Lusail), Al Thakhira, Al Qotayfah, Al Mesahabiyah, Al Shamal city, New Rayyan, Sodantheel, Fulayhah, Bin Derham and at Hamad International Airport. A fuel station is also under construction in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
Some of these fuel stations are expected to be opened this year and others in 2016, Woqod said.
Seven new fuel stations are in the design and tendering stages. These projects are in Simeisma, Al Refaa Street, Al Thumama, New Mesaimeer, Education City (Bani Hajer), Education City (North) and Umm Qarn. The projects are expected to be completed this year or in early 2016.
Some projects are in the land allocation stage while as many as 25 locations are under review by the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning for Woqod’s future projects. These projects will cover new areas such as the South Motorway and Doha Expressway.
Woqod’s fuel stations are being extended at some 10 locations. These are in Ain Khaled, Muaither, Al Tha’ayen, Al Hilal, Bu Faseilah, Al Sailiyah, West Bay, Wadi al Banat, Mesaimeer East and Al Gharafa.
Woqod had announced in June last year that it was planning to operate at least 100 fuel stations in Qatar by 2018.
Four new technical (vehicle) inspection centres are in the design stage. The centres will come up at Al Shahaniya, Al Shamal city, Al Khor and Al Wakrah. Woqod expects the centres to be commissioned this year or in 2016.
The project for establishing four C-Stores at Hamad Hospital, Aamal Tower, Barwa City and Barwa Commercial Avenue are in the design and approval stage. These are expected to be completed before the end of this year.
