HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met Emperor Akihito of Japan at the Imperial Palace here yesterday and held a round of official talks with the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the cabinet headquarters.
The Emir and Emperor Akihito reviewed relations between Qatar and Japan and exchanged views on  a number of topics of mutual interest.
The meeting was attended by the members of the official delegation accompanying the Emir.
During the official talks, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and means of developing them in various fields and exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The two sides reached a broad consensus especially with regard to the pre-emptive peace contribution policy which is based on the principle of international co-operation.
An agreement was reached during the session on the issuance of a joint statement between  Qatar and Japan on the enhancement and expansion of co-operation in the context of the comprehensive partnership between the two countries.
An official reception ceremony was held for the Emir upon his arrival at the Japanese cabinet.
Later the Emir attended a luncheon banquet hosted by Emperor Akihito in his honour at the Imperial Palace.
The banquet was attended by the Crown Prince of Japan Naruhito and Prince Akishino as well as a number of senior Japanese officials.
Separately, the Emir received heads of major Japanese companies at his residence in Tokyo.
The meetings reviewed areas of co-operation between Qatar and Japanese companies and ways of boosting them.
Discussions also dealt with topics of mutual interest.
The Emir also met a number of senior officials, businessmen and academics on the sidelines of the Qatar-Japanese Economic Forum held yesterday at the Peninsula Hotel.
A  Japanese parliamentary delegation also called on the Emir yesterday.
The Emir held talks with members of the Japanese Parliamentary Association for Friendship with the State of Qatar, Keiji Furuya, Yorkio Koike, Tadahiko Ito and Tsukasa Akimoto, at his residence in Tokyo.  
During the meeting, they reviewed areas of co-operation between Qatar and Japan and matters of mutual concern.
Members of the official accompanying delegation attended the audience.
The Emir also met the Chairman of the General Council of Japan’s ruling council Toshihiro Nikaio, who is also the President of Japanese Parliamentary Association for Friendship with the State of Qatar.
The meeting took place at Tokyo International Airport. They reviewed bilateral relations and the scope of co-operation between the two countries. They also discussed a range of Issues of joint interest.
Among the various visitors who called on the Emir yesterday were Qatari students and trainees on secondment to Japan.
The Emir welcomed the students and trainees wishing them success in seeking knowledge to serve their community and homeland. He underlined the importance of taking advantage of the opportunities made available by the secondment in enhancing their capacities and skills, in addition to extending and strengthening the bridges of relations and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The students and trainees expressed their thanks and appreciation to the Emir for the opportunity provided to them.
Later in the evening yesterday, the Emir left Tokyo concluding a two-day visit to Japan.
Bidding HH the Emir farewell was Chairman of the General Council of Japan’s ruling council Toshihiro Nikaio, Qatar’s Ambassador to Japan Yousif Mohamed Bilal and Japan’s Ambassador to Qatar Shingo Tsuda.
The Emir sent a message to Japanese Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Abe expressing his gratitude for their reception and hospitality during the visit.
