Reach Out to Asia (Rota), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), has completed its trip to Cambodia.
Twenty-six Rota volunteers, students and teachers from Qatar-based independent schools for girls travelled to Cambodia to conduct vital educational training for local schools. The trip was part of the Rota International Outreach Programme funded by Vodafone Qatar.
Dana Haidan, head of corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Vodafone Qatar, said: “We have a fantastic partnership with Rota that we are proud of, part of the Vodafone Better World CSR programme. Through this partnership, we aim to support Rota in its mission to promote the concept of community service and international volunteering among Qatari students.”
The volunteers visited Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, where they conducted a number of workshops for the benefit of local teachers and staff of Hun Sen Rota School and other schools.
Through this latest trip to Cambodia, Rota is supporting QF’s mission to provide world-class education and help foster progressive societies by addressing immediate social needs, according to a statement.
The schools that participated in the trip include Amna Bint Wahab Secondary School for Girls, Al Bayan School for Girls, Al Sailiyah Secondary School for Girls and Qatar Independent Secondary School for Girls. The number of workshop attendees reached 400.
The workshops addressed skills development and cultural exchange as well as sports training, hygiene, environment awareness and teaching techniques.
The main aim of such trips is to expose volunteers to the reality faced by in-country Rota beneficiaries in order to raise awareness about the importance of education as a tool for change. These trips further develop volunteers’ psychosocial life skills and showcase international volunteering experience that inspires more youths to take part in Qatar-based volunteering activities.
Essa al-Mannai, executive director of Rota, said: “At Rota, we give special attention to volunteers and training trips to the most affected areas in the world. The independent girls’ schools activity cements the importance of collaboration between all members of the local community to work as volunteers in order to raise awareness of the importance of education for creating dynamic and advanced societies. We also extend our gratitude to Vodafone Qatar for their continuous support of Rota’s efforts to ensure equal educational opportunities for all.”
