Winners of Katara Prize to be named on May 20

Katara - the Cultural Village will announce the names of first 10 winners of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel in the published and unpublished categories at a ceremony on May 20.
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, general manager, Katara, said a cultural festival would be held to mark the occasion from May 18 to 20, with the names of winners announced at the closing ceremony. A number of cultural activities and forums would take place.
He said that there has been a significant turnout of participants from Arab countries, including young writers and women in particular.
The number of submitted published and unpublished novels amount to more than 700, with 155 of these by women writers.
From Egypt, the award organising committee received more than 240 novels, the majority of which was unpublished. Other participants came from countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, as well as Iran, Chad and Eritrea.
In addition, a considerable number of entries were submitted from the GCC countries, with Saudi Arabia accounting for the highest - 35 novels.


Hungarian envoy visits Katara, calls for joint project

Hungarian Ambassador to Doha Istvan Elter discussed with Katara Director General Dr Khalid al-Sulaiti the possibility of holding a joint Qatari-Hungarian artistic project.
The meeting took place yesterday at Katara.
After the meeting, Dr al-Sulaiti said Katara is a platform of human innovation of all sorts, adding that it always strives to find new ways of cultural co-operation with the different sides.
In turn, the Hungarian ambassador voiced his admiration of Katara’s events and activities that extend bridges of communication between peoples and cultures, praising it as a global cultural and tourist destination and calling for further co-operation with it in the near future.


Bulgarian FM invited to attend Doha conference

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov received an invitation from HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah to participate in the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice which will be held in Doha from 12 to 19 April 2015.
Qatar’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Mohamed bin Ali al-Nuaimi handed the invitation during a meeting yesterday with the Bulgarian foreign minister in Sofia. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations.


Cyprus minister meets Qatar envoy
Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulidis yesterday met with Qatar’s Ambassador to Cyprus Hussein bin Ahmed al-Humaid.
The meeting reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and means of developing them in addition to issues of mutual interest.
