HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani patronised the opening of the 24th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship - Qatar 2015 in the presence of a number of heads of state and participating delegations at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall yesterday evening.
The opening ceremony was attended by HH the Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani, HH Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Personal Representative of HH the Emir, and HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Thani.
The ceremony was also attended by a number of the country’s guests , in addition to their excellencies sheikhs, ministers, senior sports officials and mass of people.
HH the Emir officially declared the opening of the event, wishing all success and a pleasant stay.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the IHF World Handball Championships requested HH the Emir to officially open the tournament in a speech in which he expressed his gratitude and thanks to HH the Emir for his unlimited support for sport in Qatar, where it comes within the pillars of Qatar’s Vision 2030, which is to mobilise all potentials to create sports giant monuments of global quality standards, and directing local institutions and companies to support the sport and the athletes, and the fruits of that the State of Qatar has become an international sports destination that brings the peoples of the world in an atmosphere characterised by security, safety and competitive spirit of fraternity.
HE Sheikh Joaan said that the proceeds from this tournament tickets sales will be allocated to support Education Above All’s Global Programme - Educate A Child, out of concern of Qatar in support of charitable projects, particularly the childhood and education domains.
He said: “We all endeavour to host this prominent sports event with opening of the Lusail Multipurpose Hall to keep this event in unforgettable memory in the history of handball.”


Superb lighting displays


The 24th Men’s Handball World Championship opened yesterday evening with a dazzling ceremony featuring superb lighting displays, original music and an exciting atmosphere.
The theme of the ceremony was unity through sport, with more than just handball represented in the stunning light displays and a global theme that simultaneously celebrated the spirit of host nation Qatar underlying the entire performance.  The ceremony starred Qatari children from several different local schools, the Qatar Armed Forces Band and illuminated dancers that put on an energetic performance to the delight of the crowd.
Breathtaking lighting displays added greatly to the ambiance in the arena, as the court was transformed and the audience was taken on a striking journey.  
The Qatar Army Military Sport Parachute Team and an exciting fireworks display added extra entertainment for those outside Lusail Multipurpose Hall.
