The West End Park in the Industrial Area is all set to host thousands of workers and families to witness the associated events held as part of the Qatar National Day celebrations on December 18.

As reported on Monday, the amphitheatre at the West End Park  will host an array of festivities, entertainment shows and fun activities featuring Indian and Sri Lankan community forums and school students.

A work group meeting was held yesterday to oversee  the arrangements for the programmes at the West End Park. The meeting was attended by Seenu Pillai, Naina Wag (Indian community)  and Tharik T Cassim, A Liyanage, Hafeel Zubair and Lalith Jayasekara (Sri Lankan community). It was informed by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) authorities on Sunday that the Indian and Sri Lankan communities as well as schools such as Ideal Indian School, Stafford International School, Pak Shama and Scholars International School will host a number of programmes.

The programmes will start at 8am with the singing of the national anthem by school students, followed by a parade featuring children from each of the participating schools.

In the morning session, teams representing Indian community forums will render Arabic and Qatari songs. Maharashtra Mandal, Bangiya Parishad, Sargavedi and Kottayam District Arts and Cultural Association (Kodaca) will perform events.

Among the items on the schedule include folk dances, Arabic dances, classical dances and musical orchestra.

The Sri Lankan teams will perform traditional dances, songs on Qatar in Sinhala and English, dance in Kandyan style as well as songs in English, Sinhala and Tamil.

The afternoon programmes are scheduled to start at 3pm.

The participating schools will render songs and other cultural entertainment.

The show will feature songs by teams in the Indian community in different languages. Other events such as classical dances by children of the Indian Culture Centre (ICC) dance class, drama on Qatar tradition by Sanskriti, `Kolkali’ by Social Forum, Arabic dance by Karnataka Sangha, folk dance by Telugu Kala Samithi, songs by Riyaz and musical orchestra are also scheduled.

The Sri Lankan teams will perform songs in different languages besides staging a musical orchestra, classical dance, drama on Qatar hospitality in English, Kaparinya dance, drama on Qatar in Sinhala among others.

There will also be folkloric performances, traditional shows and musical performances.

Arrangements for prayers will be made. There will also be dedicated resting areas for families, emergency medical services and other necessary services for the public. Volunteers will be on the duty for the smooth conduct of the day’s proceedings, between 6am and 10pm.

There will be awards of QR7,000, QR5,000, QR3,000 and QR2,000 for the schools winning first, second, third and fourth positions. The winner of a tug-of-war competition to be held during the noon break will be awarded QR2,500 and the runner-up QR1,500. The prize money for the races are QR1,500, QR1,000 and QR500.
