Qatar will seek to further strengthen co-operation among GCC member states and strive to ensure stability and security of the region, HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah has said.

Inaugurating the 133th session of the Ministerial Council of GCC, which opened here yesterday to prepare for the 35th summit meeting of GCC leaders next month,  Dr al-Attiyah noted that as a result of the recent events in the region, attention will be focused on the upcoming summit in Doha.

As such, “the current ministerial meeting assumes particular importance and requires from us a lot of wisdom and serious work with a view to accomplishing greater achievements in the GCC,” he said.

Conveying the greetings of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to the participants, the Foreign Minister praised the efforts exerted by Kuwait under the leadership of the Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah during the previous session.

He thanked Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah, who was the chairman of the ministerial council’s previous session, for his efforts to promote co-operation among the GCC member states and strengthen the organisation’s political and strategic status.

The Foreign Minister also thanked GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdul Latif bin Rashid al-Zayani, assistant secretaries and all the secretariat’s staff for their effort in preparing for sessions and meetings and the implementation of resolutions and recommendations during the past year.

Dr al-Attiyah expressed confidence that the Ministerial Council will contribute to the success of the  GCC Summit in Doha and the strengthening the organisation’s role in serving the interests of the region’s people.

Meanwhile, GCC Secretary General Dr Abdullatif al-Zayani thanked HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for hosting the 35th GCC summit, which will be held on December 9 and 10.

Addressing the session, al-Zayani said everyone is hoping that this edition of the GGC summit will bring more achievements.

He also commended Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah, who chaired the previous session, for his efforts to strengthen co-operation among GCC states.

Al-Zayani praised the outcome of the Riyadh meeting that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud recently called, stressing that it reflected GCC unity and solidarity.

After the opening session, GCC foreign ministers continued their meeting behind closed doors.
