The Traffic Department should deal strictly with the teenagers driving vehicles without a licence as this poses a major threat to all road users, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.

The daily spoke to a number of Qataris who stressed the need to address such irresponsible conduct decisively. They pointed out that some parents are usually lenient with their youngsters and let them drive their cars without having licence as they have not reached the legal age to get one.

“Such young people drive their cars in a very risky manner, intimidating other motorists on the roads and causing various accidents that could have been avoided otherwise,” a citizen said.

Besides, these unlicensed drivers are accompanied  by their friends, which doubles the risk and puts more lives at a stake. Many locals agreed that this issue should not be considered a family issue, as the undesirable consequences affect many people and could not be limited to the young motorists or their families.

“Parents should assume the greatest responsibility in this and should never let their youngsters have easy access to the car keys. Also the media should give more focus on the issue to instruct people on the involved risks,” said Mansur Minaykhar.

“The traffic department should intensify its road patrols and be strict in dealing with the young people who do not have proper driving licenses,” pointed out Nasser al-Ansari.

Meanwhile, the Strategic Planning Department of Ministry of Interior has started a field survey at the headquarters of Traffic department, and branches in Matar Qadeem and Rayyan to solicit public opinion and measure the level of satisfaction with the services provided by the department.

The survey team distributes forms, which include three main themes relating to the assessment of the reception, and procedures for the services provided, and evaluation of the work environment.
