HE Dr Hassan Lahdan al-Mohannadi, Minister of Justice, participated at the opening of the international two-day conference titled, “The Qatari Civil Code in its First Decade” organised by Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) recently.

The conference was held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the promulgation of the Qatari Civil Code.

It also highlighted the core role of Qatari judiciary sectors in the application and the interpretation of civil law provisions and the judicial principles in this regard.

The conference was also aimed to discern the compatibility and incompatibility between the Code’s provisions and other Arab and foreign legislations.

Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, QU president, Eric Chevallier, French ambassador to Qatar, Dr Mohamed al-Khulaifi, dean LAWC,  Hamad bin Ahmed al-Mohannadi, Council of Ministers Secretary General, Brig. Dr Mohamed Abdullah al-Mahanna al-Marri, director, Police Training Institute, Sheikh Thani bin Ali bin Saud al-Thani, secretary general, Qatar International Conciliation & Arbitration Centre and Faisal Rashid al-Sahouti, CEO, Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC) took part in the event.

The event had over 200 participants and featured presentations from academics, researchers and experts from QU and universities from Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, France and USA, as well as from legal institutions in Qatar.

Dr al-Mohannadi said: “Such opportunities to come together and learn from each other are important. An institutional state needs to be established on a constitutional and legislative framework, and the Qatari government is committed to shaping a legal identity based on the achievements of national researchers and experts, and on the linkage between academic output and labour market needs.”

Prof al-Misnad said: “We are pleased to organise this event with the aim to provide knowledge, and contribute positively to the needs of the community and its aspirations. This event will serve to foster QU’s commitment in supporting the development of the society through knowledge and strengthening relations between the community and the legal and judicial sectors, in order to ensure a safe and secure society, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”
