HE the Assistant Foreign Minister for International Co-operation Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani has said that  Qatar’s re-election, for the third time, as a member of the Human Rights Council for the period 2015-2017, indicates the “high level of confidence given to the state  by the global community as well as an acknowledgement of its growing role  in the promotion of human rights at the international level”.

Qatar got the support of 142 countries, among the Group of Asian States nominated for membership in the Human Rights Council.

The minister told QNA that Qatar’s quest to get the membership of the Human Rights Council stemmed from its belief in council’s role being the main UN Agency concerned with promoting and supporting human rights.

He expressed Qatar’s keenness to promote and protect human rights, describing that to be a main pillar of Qatar’s foreign policy. “This is highlighted in Qatar National Vision 2030 which involved important themes touching on the key issues of human rights in the areas of education, health, environment, labour rights and women’s empowerment,” he added.

He stressed that Qatar would continue multilateral co-operation under the umbrella of various international mechanisms related to human rights, especially the Human Rights Council, and co-operation with other international and regional mechanisms concerned with the promotion and protection of human rights.
