Qatar has pledged that it will contribute effectively to support the efforts of the international community in promoting and protecting the rights of children, renewing its commitment to the implementation of all international agreements and conventions.

This came in a speech by Fahd Mohamed al-Khayareen at the United Nations General Assembly conference on the promotion and protection of the rights of children.

He stressed the importance of giving priority in the development plan for 2015 to protect the poorest and most vulnerable children.

Al-Khayareen said the issue of protecting children from violence will be at the heart of the development plan in order to speed up progress towards a world free of violence against children.

He said the United Nations reports on the status of the child in the world have shown regrettable facts raising serious concerns.

Al-Khayareen stressed that there is an increase in global child trafficking, where children account for 60% of all trafficking victims, noting that despite the severity of these facts and figures, controlling this crime is possible if there is political will, and concerted and integrated efforts are taken by all segments of society, including families, schools, civil society and governments.

He referred to Qatar’s experience and the actions taken in the promotion and respect of human rights, including children, and stressed that the promotion and realisation of the rights of the child are an absolute priority.
