Kuwait yesterday commended Qatar’s efforts in promoting, protecting and persevering human rights.

Qatar’s efforts are clear in the review of its second periodical report on its role in protection and promotion of human rights, said Kuwaiti Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva ambassador Jamal al-Ghoneim in an address to the UN Human Rights Council
(UNHRC).

The Qatari report, presented to the council by Assistant Foreign Minister for International Co-operation Affairs HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, showed the existence of a political will to promote and protect human rights, al-Ghoneim added.

He lauded Qatari institutions’ adoption of sustainable measures to deal with the UNHRC recommendations since the delivery of its report in April 2014, saying that it reflected Qatar’s desire to abide by objectives and principles of the UNHRC.

Al-Ghoneim also applauded Qatar’s acceptance of two Kuwaiti recommendations on the need to continue and strengthen relations the UN high commissioner for human rights and to forge ahead with its
humanitarian actions.

UNHRC reviews human rights situation in all countries every four years, to determine the extent of improvement and help countries that have not managed to raise recognised standards, he noted.
