Qatar University (QU) has completed its preparations for the new academic year and is ready to receive students tomorrow, local daily Arrayah reported yesterday.

QU has also conducted a number of introductory forums for new students and recruited an adequate number of teachers to get ready for the new academic year.

Dr Mazen Hasna, vice-president for academic affairs, said that the total number of teaching members for this academic year was 1,130, distributed in the various departments and sections of QU colleges.

He said there is a considerable increase in the numbers of new students at QU this year, with more than 370 students registered for various post-graduate programmes.

QU currently is working to improve the quality of its education and research systems through the creation of specialised research centres. Six new research centres were created at QU in the last two years, including those for: Gulf studies, humanitarian and social sciences, sustainable development, computer science, and the Qatar centre for traffic safety. Further, QU launched 12 new graduate programmes last year, with three for PhD and 24 for master degrees.
