Gas tanks in restaurants should be filled at dawn or in the night, it has been suggested in view of safety concerns among diners, local Arabic daily Al Watan has reported.

The report highlights the importance of choosing the right time to fill gas tanks at eateries as this can help prevent accidents and loss of lives/properties.

Many people have expressed concern over the existence of gas tanks in restaurants and the practice of filling them during the day, when the temperature is high. Such explosions can occur due to the failure to observe safety requirements as well as filling the tanks at the wrong time, such as noon, according to the report.

Mishal bin Hassan al-Dahnim, a CMC member, suggested that gas tanks be filled only in the night or the early hours of the day in order to prevent accidents like the one that occurred in Duhail in February this year. He also stressed the need to enhance the monitoring of restaurants by the competent authorities and ensure proper co-ordination with Woqod to avoid untoward incidents, the report further states.

The Civil Defence is also required to intensify inspection tours and record violations against restaurants that do not abide by safety measures as provided for in the law, al-Dahnim has said.

Eleven expatriates were killed and 35 people injured, including a Qatari, in the Duhail gas explosion on February 27.
