A second year pre-medical student of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) died in a motorcycle accident in the Education City campus on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Jaber Hamad al-Adba, a Qatari. In the wake of the tragedy, WCMC-Q indefinitely postponed a White Coat ceremony scheduled yesterday.

Without the naming the student, Qatar Foundation confirmed the news on Twitter. So did WCMC-Q dean Dr Javaid Sheikh in an e-mail sent to faculty and students.

The QF Twitter feed said: “It is with great regret that QF and @WCMCQ announce that a WCMCQ student has passed away as a result of a motorcycle accident. The QF and @WCMCQ community sends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased student.”

Al-Adba’s friends were yesterday collecting monetary donations across campus. They plan to give the proceeds to a charity in memory of al-Adba. The youth had reportedly died on the spot. The accident happened a little before 4pm on Wednesday.

Al-Adba’s death is the second in an accident in Education City this year since May, when a Texas A&M University at Qatar staff member died in a laboratory explosion.
