Qatar Red Crescent has expressed shock at the death of one of its doctors working in Syria. Dr Saleh al-Hassan, 35, was killed on August 23 while performing his humanitarian duty in Tabka Hospital, a QRC statement said yesterday.

Dr al-Hassan, co-ordinator of Tel Abyad Surgical Hospital, graduated from the University of Aleppo School of Medicine. He pursued a general surgery major, and then specialised in cardiac surgery.

He later joined Tabka Hospital as a volunteer, treating the injured and saving many lives, the statement said.

A co-founder and later manager of the QRC hospital in Tel Abyad, Dr al-Hassan was a role model of commitment and hard work. When clashes resulted in high casualties, he and his team would work day and night at the hospital, the statement said.

QRC Secretary General Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi condemned the “painful incident”, which was the second time a QRC volunteer had died while performing his professional and humanitarian duty in Syria.

Dr Layth Abu al-Walid, 23, was killed in crossfire on December 8, 2013. He had played a significant role in a polio vaccination campaign.
