A number of malls in Qatar yesterday started issuing raffle coupons, marking the start of the “Shopping Fun” activity organised by the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) as part of its  Summer Festival.

Besides special discounts given by retail outlets and some shops, visitors and mall goers will also have the chance to win prizes and cash in various raffle draws every week worth QR2.5mn, QTA  announced.

“In authorisation from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, QTA will be giving away QR740,000 worth of cash, as well as eight Audi cars, four of which are Audi A4, while the other four are Audi Q7,”  a statement said.

Raffle draws will take place between 7:30pm and 8:30pm every Saturday at designated venues which include:  Hyatt Plaza (August 23), City Center-Doha (August 30), Dar Al Salam mall (September 6), and at The Pearl-Qatar (September 13).

A staff of one of the shops at The Mall told Gulf Times that they would be giving discounts and raffle coupons starting today. Others have started decorating and putting signage on their shops.

Mall representatives said there was no official launch for the “Shopping Fun” and some shops had already started giving raffle coupons.

Customers who buy items beginning at QR200 are entitled for a raffle coupon. Many of the shops have displayed “Shopping Fun” posters inside and outside.

Rashed al-Qurese, director of Marketing and Promotions at QTA, said they wanted the Qatar Summer Festival 2014 to be memorable to visitors.

“One of the ways for us to do that is to have them go home with something valuable; whether it’s a good shopping deal, or a new car, it’s all part of emphasising the festive season in Qatar,” he noted.

Al-Qurese expected  the various fun-filled and exciting activities at this Summer Festival would increase the event’s popularity, helping draw in more visitors in future.

Besides the “Shopping Fun”, many of the Qatar Summer Festival activities, like the “Family Fun” at the Entertainment City in the Doha Exhibition Center, will continue until September 27.

The “Fountain Fun” featuring dancing water shows on the Corniche across from Al Mourjan restaurant can be seen during the week from 7pm to 11pm with 30-minute intervals. On weekends, it starts from 6pm to 12pm with 45-minute intervals.

Outdoor activities dubbed as “Adventure Fun” are  being held in Al Khor regularly.

From 1pm to 6pm daily, visitors can try kayaking and other adventure games.

Families can bring their children to play at the inflatable Aqua Park on the beach at the “Splash Fun” at Al Wakrah 3pm to 9pm daily.
