Treacherous
link road
poses risk

People using the road connecting the Al-Mushaf area, Wukair, with Barwa Mesaimeer have complained about the “poor” condition of the road, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

They said the road is not properly paved and has a lot of bends. Besides, a large number of trucks use it, causing traffic chaos that often leads to accidents.

Locals who use the road frequently told the daily that a billboard had been installed indicating the authorities’ intention to remove the road and start the eastern road project. They said this happened a few months ago but no change has taken place till date. This, in turn, poses a daily risk to the lives of motorists using the road, according to the report.

Prices of fruits
soar in Doha central market

The prices of fruits in the central market have increased significantly in the last few days while prices of vegetables have remained low, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.

A number of traders have attributed the price hike to the limited supply caused by the searing temperatures which damaged large quantities of fruits.

A box of Pakistani mangoes costs QR78; pineapples from the Philippines is pegged at QR86; American apples for QR130; grapes cost QR42 for 3.5kg; and the oranges cost QR48 for 14 kg.

It was observed that prices of vegetables have remained reasonable and normal. A box of tomatoes cost QR17 while every 7kgs of eggplants cost QR23. Arugula is pegged at QR18 for a box that weighs 3kg.

The traders said prices of fruits and vegetables go with the law of supply and demand: when supply is plenty, prices go down.

Besides losing large quantities of produce due to hot temperatures, they also cited high importation costs as another reason for the increase of prices.
