The co-operation between fishermen, coastal security personnel and the Ministry of Environment (MoE)’s marine inspectors has a positive impact on the preservation of the country’s marine wealth, the MoE has said in a statement.

The MoE issued the statement recently, appreciating such co-operation and stressing it was key to developing marine life in Qatar.

Local fishermen and owners of fishing vessels and boats co-operate with the MoE’s marine inspectors and are also eager to implement related laws and regulations, it has been observed. Besides, they play a key role in raising the awareness of expatriate fishermen on the need to follow such instructions and legislation.

The ministry said the presence of Qatari fishermen on boats while fishing had significantly increased in recent times. Further, the ministry stressed that coastal security personnel also helped the MoE’s inspectors and maintained constant communication with them on related issues.

Currently, there are 500 authorised fishing vessels with proper licences, in addition to 680 fishing boats. These operate through four seaports: Doha, Al Khor, Al Wakrah and Al Shamal.

The MoE conducts various awareness campaigns targeting fishermen at these ports to instruct them on proper and accepted practices in their trade.
