The 73rd International Conference of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) on “Time to make connection” was held recently at the ExCeL London Conference Centre, the site of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

“The International conference is a good place to network with more than 2,000 delegates from 109 countries. Primarily, it is a learning opportunity to connect with outstanding speakers who share insights on timely, global issues impacting the profession through a vibrant and relevant programme. There was something for everyone to select from nine programme tracks that offered content for all levels of professionals,” said Sundaresan Rajeswar, board member, IIA.

Sundaresan said seven senior auditors from Qatar also attended.

In a televised address, Prince Charles focused on integrated reporting and sustainability and called upon the internal audit professionals to “help shine a far brighter light on the risks that the world faces”.

At the business meeting, Anton van Wyk (South Africa) was elected chairman of the global board of directors.

Van Wyk said he plans to use his term to urge internal auditors worldwide to be mindful of potential gaps between internal audit services and stakeholder expectations. New technologies, he said, are creating new opportunities as well as risks that could expand such gaps. “As we rise to meet new challenges, we must focus on the opportunities that will help us overcome these obstacles,” said van Wyk.

The IIA introduced an Elite Leadership Designation “Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership” - a new programme designed to identify and support the next generation of industry leaders.

The programme is aimed at helping top internal auditors develop skills proven to be key indicators of success specific to internal audit leadership.

The IIA is the largest organisation representing the interests of the profession and provides ethical and professional guidance, continuing education, certifications and more to more than 180,000 members worldwide.
