The first solo exhibition of Qatari artist Ameera al-Aji has been inaugurated at Katara Building 13.

It will continue for three weeks.

The exhibition is titled “1040,” which the artist says stands for her name —  one that has accompanied her throughout her life in all situations. The exhibition comprises 27 artistic works, 18 of which are paintings and nine being cubic models. Black seems to be the common feature in all of them as she considers it a colour of challenge and power, which sums up a myriad of sentiments and situations.

“Personally, the idea of using such a colour came to me from its strong presence in our community: it is the colour of the Abaya. Also, the combination of white and black distinguishes our society from others. So, I consider it a colour of power because it is deep-rooted within us and our history,” al-Aji explained.

“1040” means a lot to the artist because it’s her first individual exhibition, which has come after a lot of effort and hard work. She said it has been challenging to adopt such a new approach in the colour scheme but the audience will soon discover the significance of this usage.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Polish ambassador Krzysztof Suprowicz and Qatar Fine Arts Society chairman Yusuf al-Sada.

“We are happy to host such a distinguished exhibition by artist Ameera al-Aji, who can express her ideas and feelings in an amazing way,” said Dr al-Sulaiti.

Al-Aji has taken part in various local, regional and international exhibitions and won a number of honours and awards.
