Call to publish reasons for closing erring food establishments

A section of citizens feels that there is a need to publish the reasons behind the closure of erring food establishments so that people will be encouraged to boycott them, local Arabic daily Al Arab has reported,

At present, the names of such establishments, their location and the type of violation are published on the website of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, the report states.

However, it has been noticed that the violations continue despite these procedures, raising doubts over the effectiveness of the measures and whether more stringent punishment is required, according to the report.

A citizen said the current law and its amendments were deterring violators as the reputation of any establishment needs to be protected.

However, there is a need to implement another punishment - boycott of the food establishment, the citizen suggested.

An employee of the municipality said publication of erring food establishments’ names is meant to inform consumers that such places are dangerous for them. He added that details of the violation should be stated so that people are encouraged to boycott the food products of erring establishments.

The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has issued an urgent appeal to raise $3mn (QR10.95mn ) to support 40,000 persons (6,000 families ) affected by the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip for six months.

The QRCS said in a statement yesterday that it has allocated QR2mn for emergency response and emergency needs, which include the provision of medical supplies and fuel for hospitals, as well as QR2mn from the Emergency Response Fund (ERF) for urgent intervention in the Gaza Strip.

The QRCS condemned the violations committed by occupying Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, which it said constitute abuse of international humanitarian law, all norms and international conventions relating to armed conflict and the protection of civilians , the statement added.

It also called on the international community to take all measures to stop violations by Israeli forces and its obstruction of humanitarian services in Gaza.

It said  such practices are a clear violation of Article No 63 of international humanitarian law of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which emphasises the right of national Red Cross societies and Red Crescent to perform their humanitarian activities.

‘Insufficient’ details on weather

Despite the dusty conditions witnessed on Monday, which resulted in low visibility in the State, particularly on highways and major roads, the Meteorology Department seems to be unaware of this, as it has not issued any warning or provided information about it, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday. The daily tried to contact the director of the Met Department and the chief of the forecast section, but they were found to be out of the State. When another contact number in the department was called, the person answering it could not provide any useful information about the weather conditions or chances of dusty and windy conditions. The Met Department only issued a statement on the weather forecast up to the next morning. In this statement, the department warned of light dust in some areas and low visibility caused by dust, the report added.
