The Social Development Centre (SDC) has launched the 2014 edition of the “Tarahom” campaign, an initiative under the theme “Intu thakhrena” – meaning “you are the real asset” – during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Tarahom campaign seeks to collect funds from philanthropists and do-gooders with the aim of helping underprivileged families in the community.

The SDC’s humanitarian service has helped 22,109 beneficiaries from 1996-2013. Out of this were 21,856 medical services for kidney failure patients, 13,844 monetary services and 11,527 of non-monetary service, 6,853 educational services, and 359 medical services.

This Tarahom campaign is one of the most important humanitarian services at SDC, providing assistance to families in need, including widows, divorcees, orphans, those suffering of kidney failure as well as outstanding academic students who would benefit from scholarships.

Mariam al-Mannai, the director of community services at SDC, said: “Ramadan is the month of love and solidarity and compassion and Muslims understand the importance of giving zakat donations during the holy month. Therefore we have launched Tarahom at the beginning of Ramadan every year so that we help guide anyone willing to pay zakat or make donations to ensure they reach the people in need.”

Al-Mannai expressed her thanks for the partners such as Al Meera, Lulu Hypermarket, and Al Rayyan Media Marketing, for supporting the Social Development Centre’s campaign.

A series of humanitarian services have been organised by the SDC to bring about positive change in the Qatari community.

These services aim to assist individuals to adapt to their environment and help overcome social, economic and health barriers.
