The Arab Organisation for Social Responsibility has awarded Qatalum a Certificate of Excellence for its outstanding efforts in economic, social, and environment fields by promoting social responsibility in the Arab world.

The award was received by Ibrahim Fakhri, director of corporate communications at Qatalum during a ceremony held at Burj Al Arab in Dubai last month.

Qatalum has been supporting various educational community initiatives and a number of sporting and
cultural events.

The company has also maintained a “keen interest and deep commitment” to all international environmental standards to achieve sustainable development in the industry and energy sectors in Qatar.

Qatalum said it prioritises environmental considerations “as of crucial importance to its sustainability.”

Qatalum’s aluminum smelter is “one of the most environmentally-friendly” smelters in the world and the company’s production of primary aluminum made significant progress in the field of energy efficiency and emission reduction.

Qatalum also helps reduce landfill wastes through
recycling methods.

To support education, Qatalum held the Chair position at Qatar University to promote the study of the aluminum industry in the university for three years. It also appointed an expert in the university’s Material Technology Unit (MTU) in order to develop applied research programmes relevant to the applications and uses of
aluminum.

This was also reinforced by Qatalum’s close co-operation with international universities with advanced expertise and studies in this area and the close ties forged between the MTU and the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology.

This partnership seeks to solve “great challenges” in the aluminum industry and addressing other important issues. These include methods on energy-saving, preserving, and absorbing carbon dioxide as well as creating
eco-friendly technology.

Also, Qatalum prioritises safety and health in the operational processes and assisting specialists in aluminum technology to enhance the development of the industry and related fields in Qatar.

Qatalum also holds summer training programmes for students as part of its Social Responsibility Programme (CSR) to support the Job
Qatarisation Policy.

Through this programme, Qatalum encourages all Qatari students in high school and university to apply for an intensive, two-month summer training programme to find new and promising candidates from the next generation with the enthusiasm and desire to work, to help students plan their future careers, and to lay the foundations for the construction of long-term human capital within the company.

Last year, Qatalum won an award from the Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) for its participation in CSR activities by sponsoring Iftar Ramadan Tents.

In return, RAF awarded Qatalum an honorary award in recognition of its support of the foundation’s activities.

Qatalum is a founding member of the Qatar Green Building Council and a member of the Gulf Aluminium Council.

Through these memberships, Qatalum continues its quest to be an exemplary regional hub for environmental sustainability and the development of the local and regional aluminum industry.
