Seven persons were killed and nine injured seriously in a road accident in Al Khor on Friday, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.

The accident took place around 2.30pm on Friday when a pickup truck carrying a number of Asian workers was being driven from Al Qashashi roundabout and heading to Ras Laffan.

When the pickup driver attempted to overtake a car without being sure of the traffic flow on the  opposite direction, the vehicle collided head on with a bus.

In addition to drivers of both the vehicles, six passengers in the pickup were also killed. Nine passengers in the bus were seriously injured and taken to the hospital, Arrayah added.

 

 

Qur’an memorization course launched

The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) has launched Katara’s course for the Holy Qur’an memorisation at Katara Grand Mosque for boys aged 8-12 years old.

The course, held for the third round, will be open for girls simultaneous of the same age category at the Golden Mosque. The course timing will be from 10 am until 11:30am, where both boys and girls will be subdivided into categories that suits their ages. The course has seen great turnout so far, as 72 boys have registered besides more than 60 girls and registration is still open.

 

Qatar attends meeting of UN environment body

The State of Qatar has participated in the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) meeting which was held in Nairobi between 23-27 June under the title “Sustainable Development Goals and the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Including Sustainable Consumption and Production”.

HE the Minister of Environment Ahmed Amer Mohamed al-Humaidi headed the Qatari deletion.

The meeting discussed illegal trade in wildlife, an issue that is generating increasing global attention due to its adverse impact on biodiversity. Environment ministers, civil society delegation heads and representatives of international organisations participated in the meeting.

They exchanged views and experiences on challenges in fighting illegal trade in wildlife.

 

23,882 RPs issued in May through e-govt service

Qatar issued a total of 23,882 residence permits (RP) in May using the e-government transactions through the government portal, Hukoomi, according to the monthly statistics published by the Ministry of Development, Planning and Statistics.

While 27,625 work visas were issued in May, as many as 14,190 residence permits were cancelled in the same month using the e-services. During this period, 18,311 health cards were renewed and 10,655 residence permits were transferred to new passports.

As much as 81,027 exit permits were also issued through Hukoomi.

The e-services were also used in May to issue 249 business visas and 5,548 new Commercial Registrations (CR) were issued, to start new businesses.
