Inspectors from the Department of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce have closed a butchery in Mamoura area for manipulating the labels stating the country of origin of a variety of meat.

Inspectors accompanied by specialist physician from the Doha Municipality’s Control Department visited the butchery and found that workers from the shop were selling Australian mutton as New Zealand and Jordanian mutton.

They were also selling parts of Australian sheep like legs, heart, liver, and kidney as parts of Jordanian sheep.

Once confronted with evidence from the inspectors, the butchery owners admitted to the fraud.

The inspectors seized the evidence and closed the shop for 30 days as per the provisions of the law.

In a press statement yesterday, the Department of Consumer Protection re-affirmed its fight against commercial fraud and the protection of consumer’s rights, adding that the inspection campaigns would continue across all the parts in the country during the month of Ramadan.
