The meeting discusses ways to enhance the standard of food and agricultural products.
Requirements for the slaughter of animals in accordance with provisions of the Islamic Shariah, bottled drinking water, chicken eggs and chilled chicken are among the top issues of discussion at the 20th meeting of the GCC Technical Committee on Food and Agricultural Products Specification.
The two-day meeting was opened in Doha yesterday with the participation of the Standardisation and Metrology Department (SMD) at the Ministry of Environment and in the presence of specialists from the member countries.
“The world is witnessing rapid changes in light of the industrial, economic and cultural globalisation, which requires continuous and diligent work by individuals and institutions to play a more active and effective role commensurate with the requirements of the third millennium,” said Nawaf Ibrahim al-Hamad al-Mana, director of SMD, addressing the GCC representatives at the meeting.
He stressed that promoting the competitiveness of the GCC countries demands constant attention and development to standards and specifications as the basic foundation for the progress of industries, especially food specifications that contribute mainly to the development of society.
Al-Mana thanked the GCC Standardisation Organisation for its efforts that resulted in the adoption of more than 12,000 technical regulations, including 1,100 for food specification.
Meanwhile, the committee reviewed the specification projects that have been accomplished and regulations of its food plan for 2013-2014, among other issues.
