The Souq Waqif Art Centre will be the venue for Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) ‘Bazaar of Hope’, a handicraft exhibition looking to raise funds for Syrian women at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan and their families, from May 29-31.

Held under the slogan ‘Together for Humanity’, the bazaar will exhibit a collection of artworks produced by the camp’s women in front of the Souq Waqif Art Centre.

QRC secretary-general Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi thanked the Centre for the “generous gesture” and highlighted QRC’s “ceaseless efforts to provide Syrian brothers everywhere” - Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and lately Iraqi Kurdistan - with different forms of assistance, whether financial, psychological, social, healthcare or educational, in the hope of improving their living conditions and enabling them to withstand their distress.

Souq Waqif Art Centre art researcher Noura al-Kuwari said: “‘Our hearts are with you’ is the new campaign of Souq Waqif Art Centre. Believing in the importance of socio-humanitarian aspects of the fabric of society, we welcome QRC’s involvement at the charitable bazaar.”

Al-Kuwari noted that the second Syria initiative by the centre will display artefacts produced by women at the Zaatari refugee camp with a view to encouraging talent and mobilising financial and moral support for Syrians.

This is part of a series of QRC programmes for Syrian refugees. Its strategy is based on occupational therapy, through a crafting project for the Zaatari-based women-managed and QRC-sponsored initiative which secured all necessary supplies and requirements.

The project is designed also to provide socio-psychological support for women who have difficulty coping with their new lives amid severe conditions due to the war and concomitant destruction and homelessness.

Besides revenue, the positive outcome of the project for the beneficiaries includes keeping them engaged in their free time and utilising their skills and energy to help themselves and their families.

Under the project’s plan, 135 Zaatari women were trained in handcrafting. Over two months, they produced nearly 300 creative objects, which will be marketed by QRC for the benefit of those women.

QRC and the Souq Waqif Art Centre invites everyone to visit the exhibition on the three days, from 8.30am to 9.30pm, to promote their noble cause.
