Qatargas has showcased its new technology through which the country could daily save around 5,000 cubic metres of water or equivalent to the daily water needs of about 20,000 people. |
The new technological initiatives
were showcased by Qatargas at the Qatar Petroleum Environment Fair 2014 with
the theme “Use of Water in the Oil and Gas Industry”.
Qatargas has a themed stand at the fair, focusing on its initiatives to reduce the consumption of water and increase its reuse. The fair will conclude on Saturday.
Through its biological-membrane bio-reactor (MBR) and tertiary reverse osmosis (RO) technologies, Qatargas said an overall reduction of 60-70% in water requirement (consequently less wastewater generated) will be achieved as a result.
The MBR cleans the water through a filtration and biological process. Reverse osmosis produces desalinated water for reuse, said Qatargas, whose total daily water requirement is expected to reach around 7,500 cubic metres by 2016-2017.
Wastewater management is one of many initiatives in Qatargas that demonstrate its commitment towards maintaining the highest environmental standards.
It is also presenting a paper, “Wastewater Treatment at Qatargas; Reduce, Recycle and Reuse”, highlighting the various projects aimed towards water conservation.
As in previous years, the fair is open to the public and is more of a community activity rather than a corporate initiative. An interactive game at the stand provides visitors with useful tips on saving water at home – turning off the water while brushing teeth, using washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, washing cars and bikes using a bucket, etc.
A colouring zone, also themed around water conservation, has been set up for children.
