Students from different Qatar schools have benefited from the activities prepared by ConocoPhillips’ Global Water Sustainability Centre (GWSC) at the eighth QP Environment Fair, which is being held at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

ConocoPhillips Qatar president Gary Sykes said, “To simplify the concept to students, the booth was designed to represent the ecosystem. One of the shows utilises dry ice to demonstrate the different states of water from solid to liquid and gas.”

To expand the students’ creativity in water conservation, they were engaged in an interactive presentation about the stages of the water cycle. After the activity, the students were treated to “make and take” activities that include a density stacker tube, which shows the different densities of water and oil as well as a rubber ball replica of planet earth.

“As always, we strive to show our commitment to the environment. We acknowledge the challenges that face the region in terms of water scarcity and for this reason we founded GWSC to place water on the global agenda and to highlight the importance of addressing Qatar’s long-term water requirement in order to help fulfil Qatar National Vision 2030,” Sykes said.

Recently, GWSC launched a film competition that promoted water conservation and tackled the issue of water scarcity in Qatar. The competition, which involved 19 schools in Qatar, “was a great success and prompted the possibility of launching the competition on a national level”, Sykes added.

During the event, the company booth was visited by HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, who is also chairman of Qatar Petroleum.

The minister was joined by Dr Saif Ali al-Hajri, chairman of the Board of Directors of Friends of the Environment Center, and Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, president of Qatar University.

During the fair’s plenary sessions, GWSC research scientist Eman al-Shamari delivered a presentation titled “Advanced Technologies for Produced Water Treatment”.

From 5.45pm to 6.15pm today, Dr Zaid K Chowdhury, GWSC’s newly appointed director, will deliver a presentation on “Promoting Water Sustainability in Qatar”, which will cover water sustainability issues, water resources in Qatar, water and wastewater treatment and ideas for promoting water sustainability.

Dr Chowdhury took over from Dr Samer Adham, who managed the centre since its inauguration in 2010.

Adham has been recently assigned to ConocoPhillips in Houston, Texas, to manage the company’s Water Solutions group and oversee a multi-regional team located in Texas, Oklahoma and GWSC in Doha.

Sykes said the entire ConocoPhillips team was delighted to welcome Dr Chowdhury. He also thanked Dr Adham for his efforts to make the ConocoPhillips GWSC a designated centre of excellence for water.
