A Qatar Charity (QC) delegation has opened two residential villages for displaced Syrians in the north of Syria, a QC statement said yesterday.

Each village comprises 100 prefabricated residential units, fully equipped with mattresses, blankets and kitchen utensils with access to facilities, including a school, a mosque, a children’s play area and a shared kitchen.

The villages will benefit around 1,200 people at a total cost of around QR4mn. This brings the total number of villages implemented by QC to three, with one being built in collaboration with the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa - Qatar office, which funded the project, and the other being financed by two Qatari philanthropists.

The QC delegation included executive director of International Development, Mohamed bin Ali al-Ghamdi, managing director of Disaster Preparedness and Response, Mohamed Adrdor, accompanied by Sheikh Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Sada, Sheikh Hamad Abdel Kader, director of the Office of the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa in Qatar, and Sheikh Mohamed al-Fadeni, Public Relations officer of the organisation.

“The model village project carried out by Qatar Charity is in its third edition and represents our continuing interest in providing shelter in order to preserve the human dignity of the displaced in Syria; shielding them and their children during the cold winters and hot summers,” said al-Ghamdi in a speech at the inauguration
ceremony.

Al-Ghamdi further explained that QC will continue to build more such villages within the framework of its interest in Syria and in light of the growing movement of displaced civilians in recent months, especially from areas of northern Syria.

Kader thanked the Qatari government and people for helping fund charitable projects across the world, including those carried out by QC.

Representative of the Turkish humanitarian relief organisation IHH, Hassan Ainazi, thanked QC and the Organisation of the Islamic Dawa for their co-operation.

Sheikh al-Sada said this work was the embodiment of the concept of Islamic brotherhood and confirmation of the words of God Almighty that all “believers are brothers”. “We, the people of Qatar, are with you, performing the duty of brotherhood until you are relieved from anguish.”

The delegation also toured the two villages and was briefed on the conditions of the displaced people.

Mervat, a resident of one of the villages, revealed how she feels safe and secure in the village. She was forced to leave her home village of Baidha on the Syrian coast after losing the only breadwinner of her family.

Mervat was especially pleased with the special section of the village dedicated to widows and praised the level of services provided there. She expressed hope that more projects would be provided for children in the village and thanked the State of Qatar for construction of the facility.
