The medical teams of Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) made 69 interventions for Qatar Fertiliser Company (Qafco) workers between April 2013 and March 2014, a QRC statement said yesterday.

Under a partnership agreement signed in October 2012, QRC continues to provide medical support and coverage for workers of Qafco in the form of resident ambulance and emergency medical technician (EMT) services at all six Qafco sites in Mesaieed Industrial City.

From April 2013 to March 2014, the EMT teams implemented 69 interventions, 29 of which required urgent action to rescue victims of accidents and 40 normal health problems that were referred to specialised clinics.

The medical teams showed complete preparedness and immediate response while receiving emergency calls, reaching the designated points in no time to administer first aid as needed and transport critical cases to competent hospitals for treatment. They also patrolled the worksites daily to ensure awareness and be close to potential locations of accidents.

QRC secretary-general Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi expressed satisfaction at the QRC-Qafco partnership, saying: “Even though covering a company as huge as Qafco - with its six plants that produce millions of tonnes of fertilisers every year - is a tremendous challenge, everything is going on very smoothly and the medical teams are doing their job perfectly, with no inconvenience to anybody.”

Co-operation between QRC and Qafco began in February 2010 with an agreement to secure 24/7 medical coverage at the company’s fifth plant, then under construction, by allocating an onsite ambulance and eight qualified EMT clinicians.

As a result of the favourable feedback from Qafco’s Safety Department about the good performance of the team, the scope of the agreement was expanded in October 2012 to cover  five more Qafco plants.
