Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) started its 15th annual fashion show, Centre Front, at the Gate Mall yesterday to immense appreciation from a capacity audience. The show will continue today and tomorrow.

All graduating students from the Fashion Design programme showcased their collections, which were presented on the ramp by around 30 models and a number of children.

Speaking to Gulf Times, Sandra Bell Wilkins, chair of the Fashion Design Department at VCUQatar, said she was elated at the success of the show. “It has become bigger and better over the years. We have presented the collections of all the senior students and look forward to the next two days.”

The show was divided into various sections, namely Special Guest Designers, Children’s Wear, The Little Black Dress, Sportswear and Collections. Three students from the Richmond campus of the university were part of the first category of Special Guest Designers.

All the graduating seniors presented their creations in the Collections category.  The senior thesis collection was an eclectic mix of different shades and ideas. They reflected the individual aesthetic of each student and reinforced their individual vision, creativity and styles.

Hisham Dawoud, a senior student who had put up his collection at the fashion show, said it was a great feeling to be part of such an event. “As a designer, I catered to the contemporary market to people who are oriented for ready-to-wear collections. My collections were basically two evening wear options, two contemporary ready-to-wear options and two men’s wear options.  They are monochromatic and very minimal and as a designer that is me,” he added.

Another section of the fashion show that drew huge applause was Children’s Wear. A group of children presented a whimsical collection called Happy, which was a play of colour, patterns and design features. The semi-formal collections were created using polka dots, stripes, floral denim and lace.

The children’s collection was focused on incorporating basic design elements like pockets, collars, various fullness techniques and cascades. This was aimed to showcase a pleasant assembling of dresses, pants and jackets.

The other sections of the show were The Little Black Dress and Sportswear. The first one displayed the universal aspect of the use of black in women’s costumes across the globe. Sportswear was another attraction, which was presented in two different sections. The students moved away from clichés to bring strong individuality to their collections in this section.
