Highlighting its mission of community development in the Al Shamal northern region of the country, Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) – Al Khor has released a report on its activities and achievements during the first three months of 2014.

Exceeding 22 different activities, the branch’s quarterly work log included disaster management courses, spiritual and medical lectures and support to various events.

On the medical front, a QRC health expert delivered two lectures on personal hygiene for students of Al Khor Independent Boys’ Kindergarten with the aim of promoting public hygiene and disease reduction.

QRC – Al Khor held a first aid workshop for 80 teachers and staff of the school to enhance their healthcare awareness, another workshop as part of a training camp at Al Khor Sports Club to teach participants how to provide help in emergencies, and a third workshop for some students of Al Khor Girls’
Primary School.

The activities also included participation in the first health exhibition at Al Khor Independent Girls’ Preparatory School, which saw more than 200 attendees. Further, 40 students of Al Thakhira Independent Boys’ School received a lecture on smoking and its impacts.

The most prominent activity over the past few months was the inauguration of the “I am a Paramedic” project for the northern region. Running over two years with a budget of QR1,000,000, the purpose of the programme is to qualify nearly 5,000 students of 20 schools - from the sixth primary grade to the third secondary grade - as first aid providers.

This version of the project covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation, suffocation, rupture, bleeding, nosebleed, burns, eye injury, epilepsy, poisoning, allergies and movement of victims to medical care locations.

In terms of humanitarian campaigns, a charitable event was organised on the branch premises to launch the Warm Hearts fundraising campaign in support of Syrian refugees, in partnership with Al Khor Girls’ Centre and Eid Charity.

Contributions to cultural and social events included participation in the Family Festival at Al Thakhira Park in conjunction with Quodrat Centre. The event featured lectures, competitions, art workshops and gift distribution, in addition to free medical examinations for 30 women.

The QRC branch also participated in the Al Khor Spring Festival along with Al Khor Cultural Centre. The three-day cultural, recreational and heritage festival was attended by some 500 people.

In terms of field camps, QRC participated in the “For a Safe Spring” camp organised by the Al Shamal Security Department. It also saw the participation of 15 Ministry of Interior departments and more than 16 civil society institutions, centres and
corporations.

The list of activities and achievements also included the secondary school scout gathering organised by the Qatar Scouts & Guide Association at the Al Khor Marine Scout Camp with 120 trainees from six scouting teams. QRC provided religious and first aid lectures and arranged for
several scouting activities.

As part of the “We are All Qatar” campaign, QRC mobilised a popular initiative to clean the Farkiah beach, in conjunction with Quodrat Development Centre, Community Police and Dar Alfajr, and in co-operation with the Ministry of Environment and Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality.

In celebration of National Sport Day, the branch organised a wide range of sporting and recreational events under the slogan “Sports is the Spur for Life”. About 100 QRC volunteers and staff participated in the event with their families.

On the same occasion, QRC provided medical support during an event organised by Al Khor Club. More than 1,000 people from Al Khor and neighbouring areas attended the event.

A similar event was organised by RasGas Company Limited in partnership with Aspire Zone Foundation, with QRC arranging for ambulances and medical staff for the 3,000 employees and their families.

Moreover, QRC participated in the “international activity day” organised by Al Khor International School, with a section dedicated to introducing QRC and promoting volunteerism and donation. Medical support was also provided.

In co-ordination with Al Khor Girls’ Centre, well-known Islamic preacher Noura Bu Hindi was invited to deliver a religious lecture at the branch for an audience of more than 20 ladies and young women.

Finally, there was a lecture on volunteerism, initiative and positive attitudes among youths at the training camp of Al Kaaban Youth Centre.
