The Pakistan embassy has reserved a special day for accepting passport and national identity card applications from women and children.

According to a statement issued by the embassy, on Thursdays, only applications submitted by women and children under 10 years of age will be entertained.

It will come into immediate effect from April 17, Rashid Nizam, community welfare attaché at the embassy, said.

It was further announced that the embassy would issue only 65 tokens for identity cards and 80 tokens for passport applicants at 8am on Thursdays. No applications from men would be entertained on Thursdays, Nizam added.

This is one of the first measures taken by the new ambassador Shahzad Ahmad, which was appreciated by the Pakistani community.

The Pakistan embassy’s consular section has issued over 70,000 Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) since 2010. Currently, there are around 100,000 Pakistanis living in Qatar.

The government of Pakistan has fixed a December 2015 deadline for all its citizens to change their manual passports to MRPs.

 

SJC chief meets Scotland judge

HE the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) Massoud Mohamed al-Amri, who is also president of the Court of Cassation, yesterday met Lord Gill, the Lord President of the Court of Session, head of the judiciary in Scotland and the Lord Justice General, who is visiting Qatar. They discussed co-operation in the legal and judicial fields between the two countries.

 

‘Ensure Syria destroys all chemical arms’

Qatar has stressed the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) must ensure that the Syrian regime has disposed all of its chemical weapons. 

Qatar said in a statement at the 40th extraordinary session of the OPCW’s executive council held here yesterday that it was deeply concerned at the slow pace at which the Syrian regime is destroying its weapons. 

Qatar’s permanent delegate to the OPCW Khalid Fahad al-Khater read out the statement at the extraordinary session.

 

Labour Minister meets deputy chief of ILO

HE the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi met the Deputy Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Gilbert Houngbo at the ministry headquarters in Doha yesterday.

They discussed ways to boost technical co-operation and a set of other issues of mutual concern.

The meeting was attended by a number of senior officials at the ministry and the ILO.

 

Advisory Council holds meeting

The Advisory Council yesterday held its ordinary weekly meeting under the chairmanship of HE Mohamed bin Mubarak al-Khulaifi.

The Council reviewed a draft law on passing a Litigation Act for family matters and decided to refer it to the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee.  

The Council also reviewed the following draft laws:

1. A draft law on exempting the share of the non-Qatari investors in the profits of some companies and investment funds from income tax.

2. A draft law amending some provisions of Law No 25 for the year 2005 concerning commercial registration.

The Council then decided to refer them to the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee.

 

Fire at eatery

A minor fire broke out in a restaurant in Frij Al Nasr area yesterday. However, no major damage was reported. There were no reports of any injuries either even though there were some customers at the eatery when fire broke out.

The incident was reported around 1.10 pm, sources said. A civil defence team, which rushed to the site, put out the flames.
