Road accidents ‘cost QR17.6bn in six years’

More than 1mn accidents, which were recorded in Qatar between 2007 and 2012 (including both years), have cost the country a whopping QR17.6bn, according to a study carried out by the Qatar Road Safety Studies Centre at Qatar University. There were a total of 1,289 fatal accidents during the period, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday. The study was carried out by female students of the university’s College of Engineering. The study found that the cost of accidents in 2007 alone was around QR2.5bn and the cost of accidents in 2012 reached around QR3.2bn. These numbers and amounts indicate that Qatar spends approximately 2.7% from its Gross Domestic Product on traffic accidents annually. The study was based on “The Human Capital” model which calculates the cost of traffic accidents and their resulting losses within a certain period.

11% growth in population

The latest population figure of  2,144,101, announced this week, has been the highest ever in Qatar’s history. There was an increase of of about  28,700 people in Qatar between February 28 and March 31, it is understood. On February 28, the country’s population was 2,116,400, according to  the Qatar Statistics Authority. As per the latest population, the country has 1,597403 males and 546,698 females. Compared to the figures of March 31, 2013, there has been a growth of nearly 11.6% in the population.
