They maybe behind bars, but like any other human being, prisoners too have a sweet tooth.

Pakistani prisoners at Qatar’s Central Prison, who had been craving for traditional sweets, were granted their wish recently when embassy officials brought them a box load of treats on March 29, Community Welfare Attache at Pakistan embassy Rashid Nizam told Gulf Times.

Usually the prisoners are given such treats on special occasions such as Eid, but during his previous visit in February, the embassy official was specifically asked for some traditional Pakistani sweets such as ‘Barfee’ and ‘Rasgulla’ by the prisoners.

“The prisoners were quite happy to have their wish fulfilled and the embassy too is pleased that it could bring happiness to their lives by a simple gesture such as providing traditional sweets. We also gave them other items as well for their daily use such as their preferred tooth pastes, hair oils, cold creams and undershirts,” Nizam said.

The official meets the Pakistani prisoners on a monthly basis.

“We meet our nationals in the prisons on a monthly basis to give them a sense of ownership. We try our best to make them feel that they were not alone and we are to assist them in any way we can,” he said.

He also appreciated the co-operation of Qatari jail authorities. “They have always co-operated with us. I would like to highlight also the excellent medical treatment they have given to our nationals in the jails.”

There are around 34 Pakistani nationals at Qatar’s prison, out of which three are serving life sentences for drug-related convictions. None of them are juvenile prisoners, the official added.
