Events planned to spread awareness about TB

The State of Qatar marks World Tuberculosis Day, which falls on March 24 each year at a time when the statistics indicate a decrease in cases of the disease among the citizens.
The events aim at spreading awareness about the disease and informing citizens and residents on ways to prevent the disease through lectures, meetings and publications that are distributed in different languages.
The Supreme Council of Health (SCH), in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation  (HMC), orgainsed a seminar yesterday with the participation of about 120 doctors from various health institutions.
The seminar was addressed by director of the national programme to combat tuberculosis, Dr Abdul Latif al-Khal, director of health protection at the Supreme Council of Health Dr Mohamed al-Hajri and a number of specialists.
The national programme to combat tuberculosis in Qatar is among the most successful national programmes in the region where it provides better medical and nursing services, free medicines as well as all laboratory analysis.
World Tuberculosis Day is a worldwide event that aims to raise public awareness of tuberculosis and the efforts made to prevent and treat this disease.

Fund-raiser drive for Syrian refugees


Al Asmakh Charity Foundation will launch tomorrow a popular campaign to raise funds for Syrian refugees in Lebanon as part of Qatari efforts aimed to assist the Syrian people.
The campaign, named Al Rahmah, will be telecast direct by satellite channels to shed light on the suffering of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and their dire need for food, medicine and shelter.
Al Rahmah campaign would be an extension of previous relief efforts made by the foundation in Lebanon as part of the ‘Zammilouni’ relief programme.


Woman gets five-year jail term for drug trafficking

The Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian woman to jail for five years for being involved in drug trafficking, local Arabic daily Al Sharq has reported. The court has also imposed a fine of QR100,000 on the woman and ordered her deportation on completion of the prison term.
The woman was caught for possessing and transporting cocaine on her arrival at Doha International Airport from a Latin American country. She was brought for trial by the Public Prosecution, which accused her of importing, transporting and possessing narcotic substances in addition to evading Customs payment, according to the report. The Prosecution sought her punishment under Articles 1, 2, 3, 10, 24, 35, 44 and 49 of the relevant law, the report said. The woman was travelling to an African country via Doha.
