A number of citizens and members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) have hailed the efforts of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to protect workers by calling upon company owners to provide sunshades for labourers so that they do not suffer sunstrokes, local Arabic daily Al Sharq has reported.

The ministry has asked firms to make necessary arrangements through Twitter. Citizens have described it as a precautionary measure taken in view of the upcoming summer, adding that the State takes proper care of labourers in Qatar in order to provide them with a good work environment, the report stated.

Some people have said strict monitoring of the companies and their work sites is required through increased field inspections. They also feel that punishment and fines should be imposed on employers who do not provide suitable work conditions to labourers, according to the report.

Jassim al-Malki, vice-chairman of CMC, has said workers in Qatar can file complaints in courts without the payment of any judicial fees. He has also hailed the message conveyed by the Ministry of Labour to the companies by urging them to provide cool water and sunshades to workers, especially those who carry out their duties under the sun, the
report added.

Mohamed al-Qahtani, a citizen, has said all the authorities in Qatar are seeking to protect the rights of workers and provide them with good living conditions. He adds that giving importance to the safety and health of workers increases their productivity, according to the report.
