SCH names coding training  programme vendor

The international classification of diseases coding training programme is now available in Qatar with the recent appointment of GlobeMed Coding School as training vendor by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), it was announced yesterday.

The launch of the project came as a result of the SCH mandate requiring all healthcare providers in Qatar to adopt the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) and the Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI), Seventh Edition.

Coding according to the standards is a prerequisite to all existing providers and those that will be joining the newly established National Health Insurance Scheme, as part of the claims and data submission to the National Health Insurance Company (NHIC).

In order to achieve and maintain the required capacity and skills for ICD 10 AM coding, all providers must receive the standardised and SCH approved training.

“Establishing a coding training programme is a further step towards the improvement of the quality of coding and activity data capturing in the health sector which will not only improve the transparency of healthcare provision in Qatar but will also enable building performance and quality tools,” said Dr Faleh Mohamed Hussain Ali, assistant secretary general at SCH.

HMC to hold congenital heart disease awareness week

With the incidence of congenital heart disease (CHD) on the rise in Qatar, HMC plans to observe a Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week to spread awareness about the disease.

“At HMC, six to eight babies out of 1,000 live births or 115-120 babies are diagnosed with congenital heart disease every year, and 90% or about 100 new patients every year require congenital heart surgery,” said Dr Ahmad Sallehuddin, paediatric cardiac surgery chief at HMC.

CHD refers to a range of birth defects that affect the normal workings of the heart.

It is the most common birth defect, with approximately 1mn babies with congenital heart disease born worldwide every year. Newborn babies with CHD are the most vulnerable to disease because of factors such as immature organ systems and poor immune defences.

No obvious cause of CHD is identified in most cases, but some conditions can increase the risk for congenital heart disease, such as Down’s syndrome (a genetic disorder that affects a baby’s normal physical development), certain infections (such as rubella) affecting the mother during pregnancy, and the mother having poorly controlled type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

A Qatari lady rescued her 2-year-old daughter from drowning in a manhole in the house compound recently, local Arabic daily Al-Sharq has reported.

“After several attempts, she succeeded in pulling her child out of the manhole. By that time the girl had been in the sewer line for a few minutes.”

According to the paper, the  cause of the accident was the lack of observation of home safety measures. The child was playing in the  courtyard with the housemaid while the manhole was not covered.

“When the maid was not watching her, she fell into the manhole. The maid tried to retrieve the child but she could not get her out. She rushed to inform the lady who was able to pull the child out after repeated attempts.”
