Hundreds of children, accompanied by their parents, braved the cold weather last night to participate in various activities of the five-day Leshtah (Winter) Festival 2014 at Katara – the Cultural Village.

“It is really cold and it’s a good thing I brought the jackets of my children,” said an Egyptian woman who regularly visits Katara with her husband during weekends.

Games and recreational activities at the Esplanade also kept the participants warm.

Like some expatriates, the Egyptian woman wanted to play table tennis but a number of enthusiasts had lined up to challenge a winning player. Basketball was also a big draw among visitors of different nationalities.

The woman said she took her children to see some of the art exhibitions at the event. “We want them to learn how to appreciate art and culture,” she said.

People also had the opportunity to take pictures with a falcon handled by a Qatari, Mohamed al-Nuaimi, in one of the tents.

A break dance show by a performer attracted dozens of people. Children and young adults who danced with the artiste were given gifts.

Another feature was an awareness campaign on fire safety. Fire extinguishers were given as gifts to those who could answer questions asked by a safety officer.

A bazaar in the beach area showcasing clothes and other products is an added attraction.

There are several food stalls selling Asian and Arab delicacies.

The Leshtah festival runs from 9am to 9pm daily. Entry is free.
