Projects with a total value of QR3.2bn, intended to boost Qatar’s water reserves by as much as 126% to achieve a  capacity of 561mn gallons (MIG), were launched yesterday by HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.
The ceremony was attended by HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada and Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation) president Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari.
The projects include new water reservoirs and pumping stations (RPS) at Duhail, Umm Qarn, Mesaimeer, South Doha and Muathier and reservoirs at existing stations. This is the largest expansion of Qatar’s water reserves.
Al-Sada hailed the landmark project by Kahramaa and described it as another qualitative achievement in the water sector.
“Kahramaa is working to implement a number of  projects that will help increase water reserves and to enhance the availability of water in various parts of the country through more reservoirs, pumping stations and pipelines,” he said.
Al-Kuwari explained that the stations had been selected as per the geographical distribution to upgrade water network and provide stable water supplies to all areas, especially those with low flow.
“The projects would ensure the availability of more than one station for a single area to meet emergency requirements and avoid interruptions,” he added.
Kahramaa’s technical affairs director Ahmed al-Nasser said the corporation was in the process of launching the reservoirs project which aimed to provide huge water reserves.
Duhail RPS is the largest in Qatar with one-third of the water reserves in Qatar. It contains a pumping station, six large reservoirs with a total capacity of 142MIG. The Station serves Lusail, Al Kheesa and Rowdat Al Hamam areas.
The Umm Qarn RPS has five reservoirs with a capacity of 71MIG. It serves Umm Qarn, Simaisma and surrounding areas. The total cost is QR973mn. The South Doha RPS includes a pumping station and seven reservoirs with a total capacity of 84MIG, at a cost of QR640mn. The Station serves Doha Airport, Al Hilal and Ain Khalid.
The Mesaimeer RPS contains a pumping station and six reservoirs with a total capacity of 108MIG. The cost is QR658mn. It serves Mesaimeer and surrounding areas.
The Muathier RPS contains a pumping station and five large reservoirs with a capacity of 105MIG at a total cost of QR656mn. It serves Bani Hajir, Muaither, Al Sailiya and surrounding areas.
