A large number of Doha residents from all walks of life and nationalities participated in the Al Dana Green Run 2013 organised by Doha Bank at the Aspire Zone yesterday.
The participants, which also included women and children, had first registered themselves online. A medical check prior to the run was also conducted. The run was organised within the Aspire Zone area, where the participants had to cross a
finish line.
The run was organised to create awareness about a ‘greener Qatar’ and ‘cleaner planet’.
Most of the people who participated in the run said they did it for the first time in their lives.
Hany Sameer, 34, said this was the first time he had made the effort of participating in such an event and was glad he had come along with his friends. “Such events are not only good for health, but also give an opportunity to be social and meet new people,” he said.
Kanbo Emaba, 27, said he felt good after the run and stressed that exercise activities such as these were good for everybody. “I would say that sporting activities is one of the basic necessities of life.”
Ewan Same, 26, said that the event was “very cool”. “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it to be great, but now after the run, I’m happy that my friends pushed me to come along with them.”
William and Jena said that they usually exercised at the Corniche. “Such events give a lot of motivation to people to take care of their health and think about their environment,”
William said.
Dr R Seetharaman, group chief executive officer, Doha Bank, told Gulf Times that the Dana Green Run 2013 drew around 1,000 people.
He said that the activity was organised by Doha Bank jointly with Aspire to promote healthy life for all and support Qatar National Vision for healthcare.
“Qatar has become a global city for sports and this is part of our corporate social responsibility programmes to encourage people to practise healthy habits for their good and the good of the country. The run was first introduced in 2004 by Doha Bank,” he pointed out.
He himself wore a sports jump suit with Number 1 at the back of his jersey.
He added: “The event is also a good opportunity to introduce saving schemes to the
participants.”
Later, speaking at an award ceremony held after the run, Seetharaman said the event drew large crowds every year. He thanked the people for their participation and hoped they would continue to lead a healthy and prosperous life.
All participants were given a certificate of participation at the ceremony. A group of two performers from the Korea Freestyle Football team also showcased their skills. A magic show was also arranged for the children.
