Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri has said the State of Qatar accords top priority to human rights and has taken effective steps to protect the rights of women and children.
Dr al-Marri said in his address on the occasion of Qatar’s Human Rights Day celebrations, which was read out on his behalf by Dr Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari, the NHRC member Committee, that protection of human rights is not a mere phrase repeated in all forums and meetings but is an integral part of the vision of the wise leadership of Qatar and one of the basic pillars of the State.
NHRC celebrates the National Human Rights Day on November 11 every year as a national event.
This time the Human Rights Day is being celebrated under the wise leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani who follows in the footsteps of  HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani in protecting human dignity in Qatar and at the regional and international levels, he stressed.
Qatar’s National Human Rights Day is an occasion to reaffirm the Qatari people’s pledge to  stick to the principles of human rights as an inherent right in the society.
Al-Marri added: “We have the right to feel proud of Qatar’s unprecedented renaissance in our region. Qatar has become an example to follow since it made wide strides in boosting and protecting human rights, bearing in mind the principles of Islamic religion and values and ethics of Arab and Islamic society.”
NHRC has always played an important role in spreading the culture of human rights among all citizens, al-Marri added.
Elaborating, the chairman of the National Human Rights Committee said that the State of Qatar has made tireless efforts in the areas of health, education, housing, social security, children, women and persons with disabilities, the elderly, employment, security and justice and other areas of human rights.
The Qatari citizen, al-Marri pointed out, is very happy and fortunate than citizens of other countries. And the status of expats in Qatar is better than their counterparts in other countries.
Qatar has made positive developments on existing legislations and enacted new legislation to protect and promote the rights of children and women, al-Marri said.
