At least four Indian expatriates were killed while working in a sewage manhole in the Shahaniya area yesterday.

Sources said the four victims were from the southern Indian state of Kerala. The deceased were identified as Faisal (30), Muneer (20), Ishahaq (26) and Alangadu Mohamed (57).

Two of the four workers who went into the manhole fell unconscious and the others had followed them in a bid to bring them out, sources said.

The foursome had reportedly taken the work on contract and were cleaning the manhole
when they were trapped inside.

The accident was reported between 3.30 and 4pm, according to sources.

While Faisal hailed from Kerala’s  Kozhikode district, Ishahaq and Mohamed were from Malappuram district. Muneer’s home town was Varkala, in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district.

On learning about the tragedy, a large number of people gathered near the Hamad Hospital mortuary.

In the second week of September, a six-year old Indian boy was killed after falling into a manhole near the Vegetable market.
